Fan Page Apps for Designers

Posted on 26 August 2012 by Robert Povelones

Creating Facebook fan page apps, no matter your skill level, can be a daunting task. There are many tutorials out there about how to create a Facebook app, but quite honestly, if you are not a programmer, you will more than likely be left in the dark. Plus, not to mention, the time and effort required to design and create the Facebook app, and integrate it into the Facebook developer platform is a not so easy task. This is when services like FBiframes can really come in handy.

FBiframes handles all the heavy lifting (programming, hosting, facebook integration, etc) while you can simply focus on the app itself and making it look good. As a designer, I understand the desire to have complete control over the design of an app. There is a bit of hesitation with using a service to create our Facebook apps simply because we might not be allowed the creative freedoms that we so desire. Luckily, FBiframes’ Do-It-Yourself (DIY) apps give us designers the creative control that we are looking for.

FBiframes offers many different DIY apps at many different skill levels so you will not feel hindered by your abilities (or lack thereof). Here are a few DIY apps by FBiframes worth mentioning:

About Us App (beginner)

Creating brand awareness is one of the main goals of any fan page – letting your visitors know who you are and what you are about. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to put this on the timeline page and the Facebook “About Us” page is very dull and boring. The FBiframes About Us app offers an easy way to add this vital information to your Facebook fan page.

The About Us app offers 3 flexible templates to choose from to suite your particular needs. Now I admit, for us designers, the idea of using pre-built templates, at first, is a bit of a turn off. However, this app offers a good amount of design flexibility while keeping the details and complicated particulars out of sight and out of mind.

Another key features is an intuitive publishing interface (no HTML/programming knowledge required) that makes it easy to design, preview and publish your About Us fan page app.

HTML Editor App (intermediate)

If you have experience with WYSIWYG editors, this is the APP for you. It allows the designer full creative freedom within the editor interface. Within the visual editor, you are able to easily add images, video and text. The formatting options then allow you to edit content settings such as position, size, weight, and color. Also, I was impressed with the capability to easily add functional UI components to your app as well. Some of these components include buttons, tool tips, content boxes with icons, toggle boxes for collapsible content, image slideshows, tabbed content areas, and more. The flexibility you have within the editor is really quite impressive. If you have experience with HTML coding, you can easily switch from the Visual editor to the HTML editor to edit the HTML code to your heart’s content.

Embed App (advanced)

The FBiframes Embed app is the ultimate in creative control. Mainly it is great for advanced users that already have their page designed and simply want to easily display it as an app on their Facebook fan page. The Embed app obviously offers designers complete control because the page is completely designed and created from scratch and is therefore limited only by your own imagination.

The great thing about this app is you can control everything from design to function, but still have an easy means by which to publish to Facebook. Not to mention easily manage and organize the app within your FBiframes admin dashboard.

New Visual / HTML Editor App Features

Posted on 12 January 2012 by FBiframes

New HTML Editor App for FBiframes…

FBiframes HTML Editor App has undergone a few updates that will hopefully make it even more powerful and useful. It’s a great app for designers and developers as it gives you the ability to edit HTML directly, giving you control over what exactly gets displayed on a fan page. We’re also making it more user-friendly for novice users through items called “shortcodes”. Users of the app will find another additional line of buttons on the editor now that provide direct access to easily add the shortcodes.

HTML Editor App to provide more functionality

These provide even more functionality, to easily add things like Google Maps & Charts, styled buttons, tabs, YouTube & Vimeo videos, tooltips, slideshows, and more. We’ll be going into more detail about each of these features in the coming blog posts. But, feel free to go ahead and add the app to your account and play around with it! There’s no cost to do so.

We’ve also added a “Preview” button below the editor, which makes it easy to view what your page will look like, without having to add it to a fan page.

Lastly, we’ve consolidated all of our previous HTML Editor apps into just one to avoid any confusion about which one to choose. Now you get all the great features – all in one app!

Embed web pages, web sites, Flash, and more into Facebook fan pages!

Posted on 27 December 2011 by FBiframes

While we pride ourselves in offering a Facebook fan page customization service that’s easy and user-friendly for people with no technical experience, we realize that there are a lot of you who do have some technical knowledge (designers, programmers, developers) who just don’t want to deal with the Facebook application side of things (creating a Facebook Developer account, setting up actual Facebook apps through it, etc.), or want even more free reign than our DIY app offers.

An example of our Embed app in action.

The App

That’s why we’re introducing a new app today, simply called “Embed”. It’s a very simple app to set up, but that simplicity is also what makes it incredibly powerful. What our Embed app does is allows you to embed almost anything that’s on the internet, including web pages, web sites, Flash animations, images, and more.

It’s Easy

All you do on FBiframes.com is enter in the URL of whatever you want to be embedded onto the fan page, and that’s it! That’s right – with this app, developers can now build their own custom pages, forms, sites, and so much more, and have it work right in Facebook.

Limitless Possibilities

We are very excited about this app because it will open up a whole new world of possibilities and opportunities for not only the owners of fan pages, but also designers and programmers (developers). (Stay tuned for news on a design contest we’ll be having!)

App settings - just specify the URL of what you'd like displayed on your fan page and you're all set!

Example

For example, if you’re a developer, a business could contract you to build them a custom 2 page site to be displayed on their fan page. You would just create it in a directory on their website (or your own) at something like http://www.business.com/facebook/site/, and put all the html, images, css, etc. for that site into that directory (and sub-directories if you like to keep things organized). Once you have it looking and running as desired, just paste that URL into our Embed app and publish it to the business’s fan page. It’s that simple!

You control the HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. You can even use dynamic languages like PHP and ASP, to do forms, pull date from a database, and much more. And, since it’s hosted on your site, you have easy access to update it whenever and however you’d like.

One thing to note is that there is one main restriction with this, and it’s that the width that Facebook provides for custom content on fan pages is 520px wide. So, it’s advisable that whatever you embed is that width, or smaller (otherwise you’ll have scrollbars).

If you’re a developer, you can take advantage of this right now by offering it to your clients. The way our system works is as long as you’re made an administrator of a fan page, you can add apps to it. So, you can manage all your clients’ apps, pages, content, etc. on their behalf.

We also would like to start building a resource that helps connect developers with businesses who need work, so please contact us if you might be interested in this.

If you’re a business owner and would like the benefits of this app, but don’t have the technical resources to do it yourself or don’t know a developer, contact us and we’ll be happy to help you out!
